While in Scotland, managing operations for Ukrainian refugee accommodation vessels her company was instrumental in securing, Joyce recognized an urgent need to support the wellbeing of over 800 displaced children living onboard.
The trauma they had endured as refugees of war posed a deep threat to their mental and socioemotional wellbeing. Joyce sprang into action by establishing enrichment programs onboard, so the children could express themselves through art, music, dance, sports and play. Witnessing how these programs brought joy and hope back into the children’s lives, Joyce was inspired to form a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to continue her impact. Thus, Mission of Innocents was founded to help children displaced from war or climate devastation and political refugees heal through creative expression.

Natalia is the founding Director of the Children’s Program aboard the Ukrainian accommodation vessel in Edinburg, Scotland. Born in the Ukraine, Natalia has experience as a teacher and most recently, an art director at a children’s studio. In 2022, because of the war against Ukraine, Natalia and her family left their home to seek refuge in Scotland. There, she found a renewed sense of purpose when she began coordinating programs for children aboard the accommodation vessel where she lived. Her extraordinary love of children and sense of responsibility led to Natalia eventually becoming the program director of the children’s program in Edinburgh, affectionately given the name “Funny Moments” by the children, and has built a team of six staff to support daily activities. Natalia is a graduate of the Institute of Management and Economics in Ukraine and currently resides aboard the vessel in Edinburgh with her husband and two children.
